Fl4tlanders was started at the end of 1999 - Rich and I who founded Fl4tlanders met via an internet forum called “TotalVW” - now defunct as is the magazine, However having noticed we were from the same part of the country we compared notes on each others cars and past history with vws, at which point we realised we had met in the early 1990’s (about 1991 I think !) whilst cruising Skegness seafront late one night - I was in my Mk1 Gp Buggy and Rich was in “Flash” - his slammed cobalt blue bug. After a few emails to each other discussing the demise of various local vw clubs, we decided to try and start a new club for Lincolnshire.
Our first clubnight was held at the “Adam & Eve” pub in Lincoln - about 15 people turned up as a result of flyers on cars, adverts in G&S and other local vw specialists.
We held a couple of meetings at the Adam & Eve but unfortunately due to a lack of space and a really loud quiznight we had to look elsewhere. Our new home was the “Pyewipe Inn” on the outskirts of Lincoln where we met for 2 years - however over the last 6 months we were at this venue the attitude of the mangement seemed to change and we decided a change in venue was on the cards - made more urgent by the arrival of some enormous speedbumps on the approach road to the pub - many of our members with lowered cars simply couldnt get in !
We spent a few of the summer clubnights meeting up as usual at the pyewipe then leaving at 9pm for a mini cruise to try out alternative venues - one venue a month, we eventually settled on the Poacher as it seemed to best suit our needs and have plenty of good parking space without an off road course to access it
The rest of course is history - Alex .
